The Oriental Institute Collections Search includes the Boolean operators "and," "or," and "not" for the purposes of performing an advanced search. Additional search bars can be opened by clicking on the "+" sign to the right of the search bar.

When conducting an advanced search across the Museum Collections, Research Archives, and Photo Archives records, the Boolean operators at the left of the search box default to "OR." The only search criteria common to the Museum Collections, Research Archives, and Photo Archives is the Keyword search. Searching for Keyword=Demotic will bring back all records in Museum Collections and Research Archives which contain the word "Demotic." However, when conducting searches on particular fields, the user needs to take care in assembling the search criteria. A search for Museum Collection Object Type=Statue AND Research Archives Author=Dennis Pardee will produce no results because there is no record in the database which shares both of these fields. If the same search is conducted with the OR Boolean operator, 641 results will be returned. An example of a complex search across both the Museum Collections and Research Archives would be as follows: Search All Keyword=Hebrew, Boolean operator AND, Museum Collection Object Type=scroll, Boolean operator OR, Research Archives Author=Dennis Pardee. This search will return 10,043 results.
